Friday April 20th 2012
This is your one week reminder. Damsels in Distress is out next Friday.
It’s been a little over six months since HRH Sandra Hebron unveiled Whit Stillman’s oddball campus comedy as her final London Film Festival Surprise Film. Many were disappointed; I was ecstatic. I’ve since added it to my Best of 2012 list, tried in vain to get a preview at Teenage Wasteland, and expressed mild anguish at the decision to cut an anal sex subplot from the movie to secure a 12A rating.
Thank heavens the 12-year-olds of Britain are now free to see the new Whit Stillman movie.
Luckily, I’ve seen the movie in its new form and I’m happy to report that it’s still amazing. Weird, snarky and yet unaccountably joyful, it’s easily one of the most singular movies of 2012 and if you suspect you might hate it, you probably still owe it to yourself to find out for sure. At least that way you get to spend a couple of hours with the Mumblequeen.
