Foreign and that: The Headless Woman

Following through on my pledge to watch more foreign films, I went to see the much-lauded Argentinean mystery-drama The Headless Woman the other morning.

It didn’t exactly explode my preconceptions about world cinema. It’s only 87 minutes long but the severely slow pacing makes it feel more like 2+ hours, and ‘cryptic’ doesn’t begin to describe its approach to narrative. Most of the time you’re just sat staring at things like this:
