We (I) went to see Synecdoche, New York again last night. The first time I saw it was five and a half months ago at the London Film Festival last October.

THIS JUST IN
It’s still amazing.

It remains at the top of our Best of 2009 list.

Here are five amazing things about it that I didn’t necessarily notice the first time round:

1. Everything.
2. At no point in the movie is the phrase ‘Synecdoche, New York’ actually mentioned.
3. Emily Watson.
4. It has the perfect runtime for a drama film – 120 minutes excluding credits. Incidentally, the perfect runtime for a comedy film is 95 minutes.
5. It has the best end credit design I’ve ever seen, with white text on a white background that slowly darkens to become grey and eventually black.
