It’s Kind Of A Funny Story is the new one from Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden wot did Half Nelson and Sugar. I liked those films a lot and the trailer for this one promised more of the same, so I was well and truly BRIMMING with excitement when I turned up at the NFT for the 10am press screening.
As you may have guessed from the way I’m structuring this review, I was about to be disappointed. Fleck and Boden have basically taken all of the progress they made between films 1 and 2 and dramatically reversed the process for their mainstream debut. Here’s one of those ‘comedy graphs’ I’m so famous for to illustrate the situation:
As a result, It’s Kind of a Funny Story hovers uncomfortably between the delicacy of their earlier work and the oh-so-indie LOLs of films like Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. And there aren’t a whole lot of films that would have the nerve to make a sly joke about the ubiquity of Vampire Weekend only ten minutes after putting The XX on the soundtrack.
SILVER LINING: Career-best for Zach Galifianakis.
