After the massively unjustified surprising breakout success of Slumdog Millionaire in 2008, it was nice to see that both of its stars appeared to be carefully considering their options rather than rushing into the first big Hollywood movie that got thrown their way. As it turned out, Freida Pinto ended up in a worthy European art film from the director of The Diving Bell and Butterfly, and Dev Patel was partly responsible for this:

While it’s no 6%, Miral isn’t a great film either. Weighed down by a reverence to its true-life source material and desperate to make both a political and personal statement, it seems constantly unable to decide what it wants to say.

And the opening titles are fucking hideous.
