Well I finally saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last night.
It is the first undeniably good Harry Potter film and it is quite difficult to fault.
Where films 3-5 fell down with their desperate and conceited attempts to be progressively ‘darker’ (what the fuck does that mean anyway?) in reaction to the unbearable cutesyness of the first two, this new one succeeds by simply being a mature, intelligent and assured film that adheres closely to the book without reproducing it exactly.
Characters are complex, the humour is actually funny, David Yates’ direction is completely inspired (thank God he’s doing the next two) and the effects are off the chart. If you live in London, you’ll cry with joy when the Death Eaters fly through Charing Cross Road and into Diagon Alley.
It’s not The Godfather, and if you’ve read the book you’ll know that the ending is a little bit Fellowship of the Ring, but given my low expectations, I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed HP6.
Even the acting’s quite good.
Apart from the girl who plays Ginny Weasley. She’s shit.
