Because I don’t have a real job, I went down to the Tate Modern yesterday to see the first public screening of YBA-alumnus Tacita Dean’s new 11-minute art film Film. It’s showing in the gallery’s gargantuan Turbine Hall on a continuous loop and is pretty brilliant.
An ode to 35mm filmmaking, Film is Dean’s things-aren’t-what-they-used-to-be stab at the digital revolution (*snooooore*) but it’s also a beautiful little illustration of the quirks and eccentricities of film as a tangible and ephemeral medium, and benefits massively from the stunning presentation it’s been given in the Turbine Hall. Plus, it’s shot in 2.35:1 and presented sideways — where else are you going to see something in 0.42:1?
The free exhibition runs until March 11th next year. It’s a treat.
