I’d quite like to go to this…

Tuesday July 28th 2009

… but I can’t because:

a) the tickets have sold out and no one has got in touch to offer me large sums of money in order to ‘cover’ the event.

b) it’s on my birthday, which is the one day of the year when I wouldn’t choose to sit in the dark and watch trailers for comic book movies.

If you’re not familiar with ‘Movie-Con’, which is now in its 2nd year, it’s basically a mini version of America’s Comic-Con but at the BFI in London and with a couple of hundred Star Trek geeks as opposed to hundreds of thousands.

Last year they had advance screenings of Pineapple Express, Hellboy 2 and Tropic Thunder, as well as various ‘presentations’ and ‘Q&As’.

They haven’t announced the line up for this year yet but if I had to put money on it I’d say District 9, The Final Destination, Inglourious Basterds and Up. Or maybe Jennifer’s Body. But probably not.

These are quite good, aren’t they?

They’re for a film I know absolutely nothing about but they seem quite promising. The only problem is that there are only three of them, which as you can see is a nightmare for blogs like this one.

If you make them small enough to line up all three horizontally then the text gets too small to read, if you put them all on top of each other vertically then they take up too much space, and so you’re left with this crappy grid layout, which doesn’t even work because they only made 3.

Maybe you, the ‘readers’, can help. Fill in this blank one and send it in via the usual methods.

Ta very much.

Just Another Love Story

Saturday July 25th 2009

I couldn’t make it to any of the screenings for Danish film noir Just Another Love Story so the PR company very kindly sent me a DVD of it. It’s certainly not their fault but I do wish that Revolver could put together a slightly better DVD. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to watch an independent Danish film on a non-anamorphic image with a timecode, copyright warning and English subtitles plastered over the top. Especially if you’re a total fidelity queen like myself.

REVIEW===>>>>++++
J.A.L.S. is a very good film very badly executed. It’s plot and script are amazing but the acting is only alright, a lot of the cinematography is overly gimmicky (yeah, I know about cinematography) and it just goes on for too long. Luckily for us, it’s being remade in the US which, as we well know, is ALWAYS a good thing. I’d go with Leonardo DiCaprio, Eva Green and someone who hasn’t done a lot of serious roles before, like Seann William Scott. And David Cronenberg to direct.

Get to work, Hollywood.

Two thoughts for a Saturday

Saturday July 25th 2009

  1. It’s a shame that not very many people ended up seeing Moon. Maybe you should go and see it this weekend if you can’t quite stomach Antichrist.
  2. There is absolutely no excuse ever for anyone to express their dislike for a film audibly inside a cinema. This includes ironic laughter, derisive snorting and tutting. I don’t care if it’s the shittest film in the world, everyone has the right to make up their own minds while it’s playing. Film critics are, as ever, the worst culprits. HUNDREDS OF POUNDS HAVE BEEN SPENT ON SHOWING THIS FILM TO YOU, SO YOU CAN AT LEAST SHUT UP AND HAVE SOME FUCKING RESPECT.

That is all.

Embargo Situation

Thursday July 23rd 2009

Basically, this is when you’re going to see this lot on Ultra Culture (and everywhere else):

500 DAYS OF SUMMER
1st August 2009

ADAM
3rd August 2009

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
14th August 2009

Sorry.

In the meantime, here’s an anecdote from the Inglourious Basterds screening. We got there about a half hour before the film was due to start and there was already a massive queue. Just as we’re making our way to the back, a voice calls out, ‘any online press?’ We quickly raised our hands and were directed to the MOTHERFUCKING FRONT OF THE QUEUE.

That’s right, THE BLOGGERS RUN SHIT NOW.
