This year’s Best Pictures, next year

Friday August 21st 2009

You know the drill by now. All the Best Picture nominees come out in the States in November and December, the Academy vote for them in December, and then we finally get to see them in January and February (and god forbid, March) by which time the whole idea of them being the Best Pictures ‘of the year’ has lost all meaning.

The only thing making this year more interesting is the fact that there will be 10 nominees instead of the usual 5.

Anyway, here’s when you can expect to see next year’s (this year’s) nominees:

THE HURT LOCKER
Released by Optimum on the 28th August 2009.

SHUTTER ISLAND
Released by Paramount on the 9th October 2009.

UP
Released by Disney on the 9th October 2009.

AN EDUCATION
Released by E1 on the 30th October 2009.

NINE
Released by Entertainment on the 25th November 2009.

THE ROAD
Released by Icon on the 8th January 2010.

THE LOVELY BONES
Released by Paramount on the 29th January 2010.

INVICTUS
Released by Warner Bros on the 5th February 2010.

PRECIOUS
Not bought for UK distribution as of yet.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 2
Released by Fox on the 26th December 2009.

That last one is a hilarious joke.

Shit’s about to get biblical

Thursday August 20th 2009

We’ve ‘featured’ a new trailer today for Law Abiding Citizen, a new thriller starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler. It’s all very new.

There are two lessons to be learned for Law Abiding Citizen:

LESSON ONE
Law Abiding Citizen looks like an absolute smash of a film.

LESSON TWO
Movie poster designers aren’t even trying to hide the fact that they’ve reversed characters’ heads any more.

BONUS LESSON
Gerard Butler has a weird neck.

The seventh film from Quentin Tarantino is out today in the UK

Wednesday August 19th 2009

But it’s not out until Friday in the United States so you should see it tonight and then find an American you can ring up and gloat to. SKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL.

I saw it a second time the other night and I can once again confirm that it is phenomenal. Christoph Waltz will almost certainly win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and he almost certainly deserves it.

It’s been nearly a year since I posted the very first image from the movie (see above) and back then the release seemed incredibly far off. But now it’s here. Hooray for the passage of time.

Date for your diary: Avatar Day

Tuesday August 18th 2009

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 3 years (chortle), you’ll have heard about James Cameron’s Avatar.

What you may or may not have heard about is the MAJOR FUCKING TOP TASTIC SPACE JAM news that they’re screening 16 minutes of the film entirely free and in 3D a whopping 4 months before it gets released, at a handful of cinemas around the country. Or this Friday the 21st of August to be more precise.

Here’s a bit of press release:

Twentieth Century Fox announced today additional information about its global, history-making event when, on August 21, the world will get its first look at director James Cameron’s motion picture epic AVATAR. In this unprecedented experience, the studio and Cameron will debut the film’s teaser trailer everywhere, while select cinemas and IMAX® theatres will screen hand-picked scenes in 3-D, prepared by the renowned filmmaker.

So it’s going to be epic basically. Here are the cinemas involved:

Cineworld Aberdeen
Cineworld Birmingham, Broad Street
Cineworld Brighton
Cineworld Cardiff
Cineworld Edinburgh
Cineworld Glasgow, Renfrew Street
Cineworld Sheffield
Odeon London IMAX Greenwich
Odeon London IMAX Wimbledon
Odeon Manchester Printworks
Odeon Southampton
Vue Bristol Cribbs
Vue London West End
BFI Southbank IMAX

And you can attempt to get tickets by going to See Film First and entering this code:

If you can’t get hold of tickets, check back here on Friday evening for my entirely non-exclusive report.
