Remember when ‘Hollywood’ made a film adaptation of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer-winning play Doubt and they let him direct it? And then in order to justify bringing it to the big screen, he went completely Danny Boyle on that mother and filled it full of wonky angles and expressionistic sound effects.
This week’s play-turned-movie Rabbit Hole, from Shortbus director John Cameron Mitchell, seems to have the opposite attitude: that plays are wicked and movies should be more like them.
So if you enjoy fairly tense emotional dialogue shot in the most banal, uncinematic manner possible, then get ready for the best 91 minutes of your life.
You haven’t seen sitting until you’ve seen this movie.
I’ve already plugged it into the ground on Twitter, but if you have yet to subscribe to the Picturehouse Podcast on iTunes, then your life is only partially complete. Honest, funny and mercifully devoid of the ‘just three bros having a few brewskis and speaking some truth’ vibe of most movie review podcasts, it really is properly good.
This year, hosts Sam and Simon are also doing a live video broadcast from their front room during the Oscars, and they’ve cooked up the worryingly sexy video above to explain the whole thing.
I’m lucky enough to be joining them on the 27th February so tune in if you too will be staying up all night to make sure The Social Network wins.
I am super mega proper special triple psyched to announce that we’ll be showing Richard Ayoade’s astounding directorial debut Submarine at the sixth Ultra Culture Cinema event on March 4th. We’ve already got plenty of exciting surprises planned so get your tickets while you STILL FUCKING CAN.
Ultra Culture will be leaving the safe confines of sunny London next Wednesday and heading up to Edinburgh for the third in a series of special screenings organised by VW’s See Film Differently campaign. They’re showing Trainspotting (it’s like 127 Hours but not in any way shit) and holding an exhibition of photography from the making of the film in two of the original shooting locations.
If you’re wondering where this ‘Edinburgh’ is, here it is on a map:
It’s sure to be ‘quite a night’ so why not apply for free tickets and come along yourself? Come and find me and I’ll tell you what London’s like.
